On June 03, 2009 Rear Admiral James F. Calvert1 died at the age of 88—he drove our third nuclear power submarine2 to the North Pole, just to see what would happen—then went on to guide our Naval Academy as its 46th superintendent3.
North Pole submarine visits4 are now routine—there's still plenty of "just to see what happens" experiments being conducted, too.

It's of course entirely consistent with submariner de rigueur to thoughtfully do something just to see what will happen.
