As the Bush administration tries to implement its "In Torture We Trust Act 2006" (aka Military Commissions Act 2006) our military leaders have a message for detainee lawyers - aggressively defend detainee rights and your military career is over.
Earlier this year Lieutenant-Commander Charles Swift (Hamdan v Rumsfeld military lawyer) was passed over for promotion, ending his military career. Additionally, three other military lawyers who have defended detainees have been passed over for promotion.
In the latest incident the Marine leadership has gagged and threatened detainee lawyers Lieutenant-Colonel Colby Vokey and Sergeant Heather Cerveny following their report that guards bragged about beating prisoners.
The "In Torture We Trust Act 2006" has disgraced our nation by attempting to rig and pervert our system of justice to convict and dispose of detainees. Our military is now trying to muzzle and gag those charged with defending detainees within that rigged and perverted system of injustice.
Shame on those in congress who voted for the "In Torture We Trust Act 2006" (aka Military Commissions Act 2006)! Shame on the military leadership for trying to muzzle those charged with defending detainees within that rigged and perverted system of injustice! Shame on those Americans who do not stand and vehemently decry these efforts to pervert our system of justice and ultimately our beautiful Constitution!
