  • UPDATED 08/08/2009 ABC News, Swearing in Justice Sonia Sotomayor

America's first Latino and third woman Supreme Court Justice takes the oath of office, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts:

"I, Sonia Sotomayor, do solemnly swear that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America under the Constitution and laws of the United States. So help me God."--Justice Sotomayor--

The new Associate Justice of the Supreme Court is accompanied by her mother and brother.

  • It will of course be wonderful to have another woman on our Supreme Court—women are vital and indispensable to perpetuating this grand experiment called America.

Perhaps because our Supreme Court nominations have turned in to carefully choreographed political events, the current nominee’s responses have not, yet, made much use of our unique and fascinating history.

Certainly good judging occurs in the absence of a detailed knowledge and understanding of our history—great justices capable of preserving and perpetuating our grand experiment—doubtful.
